A tavern built by my fifth great-grandfather makes several appearances in my Heirs of Freedom trilogy—including the upcoming third book, West of the Moon!
Peter Kichline Jr. built the Easton, Pennsylvania, landmark in 1794, and over the years, it was known as Kichline’s Tavern, the Fountain House, and the Springbrook Tavern. It stood at what is now the corner of Northampton and 25th Streets and was famous for its trout. A spring ran near its west end, and Peter built a trough for fish to stay until they were ready for the table.
Sadly, the building was torn down in 1978 to make way for an appliance store. I’m glad it lives on in this print of a painting by Preston Hindmarch—and in my stories.
