On August 27, 1776, the American Revolution’s first battle after the Declaration of Independence was fought at Brooklyn. Led by British General William Howe, his superior numbers and their training overwhelmed the outnumbered Americans. Northampton County Pennsylvania farmers and tradesmen led by Colonel Peter Kichline, held their ground, allowing Washington’s remaining army to escape. Hundreds of Patriots were killed or wounded in the fighting, including Colonel Kichline, who was captured and imprisoned. Although the Americans lost New York City to the British, the Army escaped through a Providential fog and lived to keep the flame of independence alive. I wrote Peter Kichline and his “Flying Camp’s” story in the 2019 Golden Scroll Historical Novel of the Year, Easton at the Crossroads.
