The Korean War Armistice was signed on July 27, 1953, ending a three-year conflict that Americans were eager to put behind them. The parades that greeted returning World War II veterans and the protests that Vietnam veterans faced didn’t happen for those who’d fought a world away from 1950-1953. There was mostly indifference to them.
The Korean War is commonly known as “The Forgotten War,” but this year, during its 75th anniversary, America does remember. One of the commemorative events took place last Saturday in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, home of the Little League World Series. A group of earnest supporters put together a banquet to honor those who served from their county in Korea. I was privileged to give the address, and at times, I was so moved by the sight of them, their sacrifices, and their stories, I found it difficult to speak. They will always have a special place in my heart.
